GHOSTS OF ROSEWOOD CENTER
ROSEWOOD CENTER, in OWINGS MILLS, MARYLAND
__________________________________________
Owings Mills, is an "unincorporated" community and a "Census-designated place" in Baltimore County, Maryland.
It's really a suburb of Baltimore.
The population was about 25.000 at the 2003 census.
Owings Mills is home to the northern Terminus for the "Baltimore's Metro Subway" and to "Owings Mills Mall".
It is also home to the "Baltimore Ravens" headquarters facility.
The ROSEWOOD CENTER is a psychiaqtric hospital, located in OWINGS MILLS, Maryland.
It was established in 1888 as the "Asylum and Training School for the Feeble Minded.
From 1912 to 1961, ie was known as the "Rosewood State Training School".
In 1961, the facility was renamed as the "Rosewood State Hospital".
After the 'State Departments of Health and Mental Hygiene' merged in 1969, tha facility has been threatened with closing in recent years.
The old and new facilities stand directly across a field from each other, the newer facility still active and housing over half of the people with developmental disabilities, who reside in Maryland's four state-run institutions.
The old grounds have been known for GHOST SIGHTINGS, and have been well travelled through.
The main building was burnt in a 2006 case of arson, and the site is now under security monitoring.
On January 15, 2008, the state of Maryland announced that Rosewood would close within 18 months.
NOW THE TIME IS COME

ROSEWOOD is a HUGE institution that housed Maryland's developmentally disabled for over a hundred years.
The facility has finally closed its doors Tuesday, June 30, 2009
What might happen with that sprawling Owings Mills property?
File cabinets are being moved out Tuesday as Rosewood Center closes its doors.
The last few employees cleared out their desks.
In the 1800s, it was called an "asylum for the feeble minded."
People who ran away were put in a room with bars.
At least 13,000 Marylanders with developmental disabilities have been housed at Rosewood.
And there was ghosts sightseeing in its grounds.
But that was long ago.
ROSEWOOD FACILITIES AND GROUNDS
"As you drive through, it's eerie.
There's only one building with cars and there used to be 500 employees and almost 200people here," said Bob Day, Rosewood director.
When it closed, some families who's loved one's had been at Rosewood for decades worried change would upset them.
The director said for most, life in group homes has been more fulfilling.
The BIG QUESTION now is:
What happens to the 200 acre Rosewood grounds ?
The most popular plan is one by Stevenson University,
to purchase at least 3/4th of the land.
Its Owings Mills campus is right next door.
The University says there are some newer buildings it could quickly
renovate and occupy, but older dilapidated buildings like those that
haven't been occupied for years, it would have to raze.
"There are probably a dozen buildings we think would be usable
that we could use as administrative space.
For a school of education and maybe a school of therapy," said Tim Campbell, Stevenson Vice President.
At a Baltimore County planning meeting Thursday, the Stevenson plan got
unanimous support from all present.
"The community was very clear they did not want any high impact
residential or commercial development.
The infrastructure in Owings Mills is already overtopped,"
said Delegate Dana Stein.
The University says it would like to build a number of sports fields
and possibly buy the last 50 acres and also build an ampitheatre.
Anyway the University says its plan is very preliminary
and it must first assess the cost of razing old buildings
filled with asbestos.

Rosewood was not a psychiatric hospital. It was a facility for the Developmentally Disabled. DD does not equal psychiatric problems.
